CI welcomes Father Gregory Boyle to campus

http://www.csuci.edu/news/releases/2010_fathergregoryboyle.htm

Camarillo, Calif., Nov. 9, 2010 – CSU Channel Islands (CI) will feature Father Gregory Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, for a presentation on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010. The event will take place from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in Malibu Hall 100 on the CI campus and is open to the public.

Andrea Grove, Associate Professor of the Political Science Program and Faculty Director for both the Center for Community Engagement and the California Institute for Social Business explained, “The many ways in which Father Boyle has given hope to at-risk and formerly gang-involved members of our communities are awe-inspiring. His accomplishments provide our students who are studying social entrepreneurship and will soon be studying social business with essential lessons and inspiration.”

Boyle heads up the largest intervention program in the country, offering job training, tattoo removal and employment to members of enemy gangs. The program has become a national model.

One of eight children, Boyle grew up comfortably in Hancock Park in Los Angeles and graduated from Loyola High School in 1972. He was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1984. The possessor of three master’s degrees, he became a social activist after working with the poor.

Boyle staked out the Pico-Aliso neighborhood in Los Angeles, probably the most heavily gang-infested area in the United States, and started his first business, Homeboy Bakery, as a means to provide job training, work experience and a chance for members of rival gangs to work together. Homeboy Industries, an independent non-profit organization, today includes Homeboy Bakery, Homeboy Silkscreen, Homeboy Maintenance, Homeboy/Homegirl Merchandise, and Homegirl Café.

A winner of countless humanitarian awards, Boyle is a surrogate father to many of the young men and women that have passed through Homeboy Industries. His secret weapon is compassion, which figures in the title of his new book, Tattoos on the Heart: the Power of Boundless Compassion. The book chronicles his work in the barrio with stories and essays. Having buried more than 168 of his young protégées, boys and girls, he relates how he has managed to retain the faith and hope that keep him going. There will be a book signing after Boyle’s presentation.

CI’s Andrew Morris, Associate Professor in Sociology, who teaches an interdisciplinary and service learning course titled Social Entrepreneurship, said, “ Using new and emerging 21st century models of social entrepreneurship, Father Boyle and Homeboy Industries are turning problems of unemployment and gang violence into possibilities, for indeed, to quote Father Boyle, ’Nothing stops a bullet like a job.’”

CI adopts fast multi-modal communication service to enhance emergency preparedness

http://www.csuci.edu/news/releases/2010_mutimodualcommunicationservice.htm

Camarillo, Calif., Nov. 3, 2010 – California State University Channel Islands (CI) announced it has launched a rapid, multi-modal Connect-Ed® communication service from Blackboard Connect Inc. to deliver time-sensitive notifications to students, faculty and staff.

The University’s new communication tool, CI Alert, provides campus officials with the ability to reach students, faculty and staff with information and updates during unforeseen events or emergencies, within minutes, through phone calls, emails and/or text messages. All students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled to receive emergency messages through their campus email.

“In today’s current climate we need to be prepared for situations that we never could have anticipated happening and recognize the important role that immediate communication plays in keeping students and the campus community safe,” said Nancy Covarrubias Gill, Director of Communication & Marketing. “As part of our comprehensive critical response plan, we have added this new communication service because of its successful track record and multi-modal capabilities that will allow us to keep students and the campus community informed whether they are in their residence hall, sitting in front of their computer, working in an office, or on their way to class.”

CI Alert enables campus officials to schedule, send, and track personalized voice messages to up to five phone numbers per student, faculty and staff, and immediately sends messages via four different modes of communication:

• Voice messages to home phones, work phones, and cell phones
• Text messages to cell phones, PDAs, networked digital signage, and other text-based services
• Text messages to email accounts
• Messages to TTY/TDD receiving devices for the hearing impaired

Additionally, the University will provide updates or instructions during emergencies on the University’s Web site at www.csuci.edu and the campus emergency hotline at 805-437-3911.

CI receives two U.S. Department of Education Grants worth over $6 million

http://www.csuci.edu/news/releases/2010_twousdeptedgrants.htm

Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 29, 2010 – When CSU Channel Islands (CI) was designated an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) last spring, it became eligible to receive additional federal grants to support its programs. The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded two separate grants to CI, only one of three, four-year colleges in California to receive both a Strengthening Institutions – Hispanic Serving Institutions (SI-HSI) grant ($3,186,035 over five years) and Promoting Post-baccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans (PPOHA) grant ($2,824,495 over five years).

“We are extremely pleased to receive these significant grant awards – a testament to our commitment to provide meaningful access for all CI students as well as for elementary, middle, high school, and community college students throughout Ventura County,” stated President Richard R. Rush. “Encouraging a college-going culture in the County will provide a strong workforce for our future.”

The Strengthening Institutions – Hispanic Serving Institutions (SI-HSI) Program part of the U.S. Department of Education, is striving to meet President Obama’s educational goal of having the highest college graduation rate in the world by 2020. The SI-HSI Program expands educational opportunities and improves educational attainment for students at HSIs. The PPOHA Program supports institutions that offer a post-baccalaureate certificate or degree to help under-represented and low income students enroll and succeed in graduate study.

CI was one of thirty institutions in California and 78 institutions nationwide to receive the SI-HSI award. Ventura College and Santa Barbara City College also received SI-HSI awards. The SI-HSI award lets CI expand and enhance academic offerings. This grant will fund Project ISLAS (Institutionalizing Student Learning, Access and Success) which will benefit all CI students by developing and promoting a university-going culture in the region that addresses barriers to higher education for historically underrepresented students in universities.

Project ISLAS focuses on helping students get in to college and get through college. Specifically, it will focus on creating university readiness in Hispanic elementary, middle school, high school and community college students of Ventura County. Once these students become part of the CI community, they will take part in a University Experience Program to enhance student retention. This program will include first-year and transition-year seminars and learning communities to enhance student outcomes, plus provide training for faculty and staff to help them best serve this student population. The grant also assesses student learning outcomes at the course level and program level through the development of an e-portfolio system.

CI was one of five institutions in California and twenty-one nationwide to receive the PPOHA award. CI will use the grant to fund Project VISTA (Vistas del Futuro), which will be applied to expand CI’s Hispanic participation in post-baccalaureate programs, and to build additional professional and community partnerships designed to strengthen graduate programs and promote student success. CI will also use grant funds to provide financial aid for Hispanic and low-income students in post-baccalaureate programs at CI, as well as to promote greater access by expanding distance learning.

“Access to a higher education leads to access to a higher socio-economic status. These grants awarded to CSU Channel Islands will help bridge the gap for Hispanic students between a K-12 education and a college education,” stated Dr. Ramon Flores, President of the Ventura County Board of Education. “They will allow Hispanic students to become more productive members of our society.”

As Ventura County’s only four-year, public university, CI is committed to providing top quality undergraduate and graduate educational opportunities for all students throughout the region.

CI Professor and Students Present Reading from New One Act Plays

http://www.csuci.edu/news/releases/2010_readingfromnewoneactplays.htm

Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 27, 2010 – CSU Channel Islands’ Associate Professor of English, Bob Mayberry will present Dining with the Donners: Chewing on History on Monday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in the John Spoor Broome Library, room 1756. Mayberry will speak about the sabbatical process and finishing a 12-part cycle of one-act plays entitled The Donner Party Cycle. Mayberry, student actors, and students from his playwriting class, will present a reading from his one-act plays. The public is invited but space is limited. Reservations may be made by calling 805-437-8454.

Mayberry, growing up in Reno, was intrigued by the story of the Donner Party, a westward migration in 1846 of nearly 20 covered wagons going from Springfield, Illinois to California. During the journey the group split and other members joined as they endured horrendous hardships. Only nine wagons finally reached the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Donner Lake where they were overtaken and stopped by severe winter storms, resulting in starvation, which it is believed led to acts of cannibalism.

Mayberry did much research and preliminary work, visiting historical sites of the Donner Party, as he honed the idea of a dramatic work that blended history with the playwriting process. In June of 2009, on a 16-month sabbatical, he wrote his Donner Party cycle.

There will also be a production of the first half of the 12-part cycle by the Performing Arts program on the CI campus in March 2011.

CI unveils expanded facilities for Art Program and Mike Curb Studios

http://www.csuci.edu/news/releases/2010_expandedfacilitiesartandmikecurbstudios.htm

Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 27, 2010 – CSU Channel Islands (CI) unveiled on Friday renovated facilities in Napa Hall to help expand the Art program. Through the generosity of Mike Curb – musician, politician, and philanthropist – a new production and post production studio facility was also unveiled. The Mike Curb Studios, which comprises one third of Napa Hall’s space, includes the latest state-of-the-art studio technology and will provide students with hands on experience in film and video production, post-production and visual effects, animation, gaming, and music.

CI has been exploring the idea of expanding existing programs to create hybrid programs involving new technology in the area of multimedia, and the business of entertainment with an emphasis on film, video animation gaming and music. This would be a crossover of the subject areas of art, computer science, and business.

The addition of the Mike Curb Studios allows CI to further advance educational capacity both in art education and in entertainment industry management and production. There are currently courses dealing with entertainment, including a lecture series of professionals from the video, television, film, and music industries. Some of the speakers have included recording artist LeAnn Rimes; Neil Portnow, President and CEO of The Recording Academy; Orly Adelson, President and CEO of Dick Clark Productions; and Budd Carr, film music supervisor to Oliver Stone.

“As a result of Mike Curb’s generosity, CI has a state-of-the-art production and post production studio that will facilitate the creation of new curriculum related to a wide range of areas in the entertainment industry,” stated Professor Jack Reilly, chair of the Art program at CI. “Our students now have the opportunity to produce work in a professional environment, which will ultimately lead to new and increased opportunities for them in the entertainment industry upon graduation.”

Attendees at the unveiling included the campus community, Curb, and Mark Hartley, partner and owner of Fitzgerald Hartley Company, a music talent management company. Hartley has been involved with CI as the Chairman of the Entertainment Studies Advisory Board and has pulled together many industry professionals and other resources to offer assistance in the effort.

CI welcomes Fulbright Scholar to campus

http://www.csuci.edu/news/releases/2010_ciwelcomesfulbrightscholar.htm

Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 20, 2010 – CSU Channel Islands (CI) has welcomed Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Susanne Brüggen. She has joined CI’s faculty for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Brüggen, a German national, is an educational researcher and teaches sociology at the University of Teacher Education in Switzerland. She will teach a variety of undergraduate courses at CI and offer a course through the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning this winter. In addition, she will offer a series of public lectures sponsored by the Center for International Affairs, the Sociology Program and Osher. Her areas of interest include the ethnography of the school, death and dying, qualitative methods and the sociology of religion.

Fulbright awards are given to individual scholars from American universities to teach and do research abroad at an international university. The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program allows selected American universities to host a scholar from another country. Getting a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence is difficult because it is a very competitive grant, funded by the U.S. Department of State.

CI has a number of Fulbright Award winners on its faculty: Daniel Lee, Sociology; Renny Christopher, English; Jacque Kilpatrick, English; James Meriwether, History; and Geoff Dougherty, Physics. However, Brüggen’s grant marks the first time that CI has successfully competed to win an international scholar on its campus.

Dr. Daniel Lee stated, “A group of colleagues worked together to submit a formal proposal that described CI and our commitment to international education, along with a plan for how we would integrate and utilize a visiting scholar.” Once the grant had been secured, the group looked at possible candidates from different countries, narrowed that list and finally selected Brüggen as the best fit. When the complex approval process was finished, Brüggen packed her bags for California. Lee said, “We are very happy to have a sociologist as our first Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence.”

Lee explained, “One of the things that attracted us to Dr. Brüggen was her diverse research expertise. She has written a book and published articles on the sociology of death and dying, expertise which she will share with the campus during several public lectures. She will also pursue collaborative research with colleagues in the Sociology Program and the School of Education.” He also noted that, “She will work with Dr. Antonio Jimenez Jimenez and the Center for International Affairs to help increase student interest in study abroad programs, foreign language courses, and other internationally oriented events offered on campus.”

This is Brüggen’s first visit to the United States and she has plunged into campus life, even joining CI’s growing choir. For her part, Brüggen remarked, “I am impressed by the lovely area and the wonderful climate! I enjoy the atmosphere of living and working at a place where so many people work closely together,” explaining that at a German university offices and buildings are very scattered. She is also enjoying the diversity of the campus population.

CI faculty member presents reading from memoir

http://www.csuci.edu/news/releases/2010_facultymemberpresentsreading.htm

Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 19, 2010 – Dr. Joan Peters, Associate Professor of English at CSU Channel Islands (CI), will present a reading from her memoir, The Pleasure Principle: A Life in Nine Stories, on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the John Spoor Broome Library, Room 1360. The campus community and public are invited to attend, though seating is limited.

The memoir represents the result of work accomplished on her sabbatical leave and explores her embrace of the radical politics of her childhood, which proved to be the ideas found in her family history. The chapter she will be reading, “The Peckolicks of Kozienice,” is a personal and sociological look at an Eastern European Jewish family. She discovered a connection to the lives of her grandparents and the Eastern European Jews in their shtetl, people with whom she had thought she had no connection.

Peters stated, “Where the pleasure in the title came in was a surprise to me.” She researched at YIVO Jewish Institute for Research in New York City, which since 1940 to today has been a preeminent resource center for East European Jewish Studies. She also interviewed many family members. Peters said, “What I found was a history quite different from the one I’d read about in the Jewish nostalgia books, like The World of Our Fathers.” Instead of joyous togetherness, she found a fierce caste system and a rigid patriarchy.

Limited parking is available on campus. A daily permit is $6. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo with bus service to and from the campus. Riders should board the VISTA Bus to the campus; the fare is $1 each way. Buses arrive and depart from the Camarillo Metrolink Station every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. For exact times, check the schedule at www.goventura.org.
