Camarillo, Calif., Apr. 29, 2009—Five high school students who were recipients of a special award at the Ventura County Science Fair have been invited to share their projects at California State University Channel Islands, Thursday, April 30 from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. The students will display their Science Fair projects for faculty and staff in the John Spoor Broome Library, room 1360.
The CSUCI Science Fair Special Awards spanned a wide range of subjects covering topics in five disciplines: Physics, Health Sciences, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Environmental Science and Resource Management, and Biological Sciences. The winning students produced exemplary work in each of the five areas.
The Physics Special Award went to Brendan Daly of Ventura High School for his project, “Heinrich Ruben’s Magic Tube.” Mary White, also from Ventura High School won the Health Sciences Special Award for her project titled “Me vs. Leukemia,” in which she researched her cancer therapy and monitored her blood work through treatment with Gleevec. Both students did an outstanding job under the guidance of their project advisor, Karen Reynosa.
Winning the Chemistry/Biochemistry Special Award was Samantha Guhan of Newbury Park High School for her project “A Tripeptide-Based Study of the Role of Flanking Amino Acid in DOPA Mediated Mussel Adhesion,” supervised by project advisor Debbie Dogancay. The Environmental Science and Resource Management Special Award went to Brenna Callero from Thousand Oaks High School for his research on “Understanding the Correlation between Mussel Populations in Watersheds and Harmful Microcystis Algal Blooms,” under the guidance of project advisor Rhonda Frohn.
Emily Zolfaghari of La Reina High School won the Biological Sciences Special Award for her project on the “Effects of Glucose and the Proliferation of ML10 Ovarian Cystadenoma Epithelial Cells Using MEM, MEM/DMEM, and DMEM Solutions,” under the guidance of project advisor Sadhana Neurgaonkar. Emily is the sister of last year's recipient, Olivia Zolfaghari who will attend CSU Channel Islands in fall 2009 as a pre-nursing student.
The recipients of the CSUCI Science Fair Special Award receive a $75 gift card and a two-year scholarship for $500 per year to attend CSU Channel Islands.
