Back to Dolphin Email Migration Project
Dolphin Email is the student email system for CSU Channel Islands. It is one of the official means of communication between the University and its students. Please see the CSU Channel Islands Policy on Communication with Students.
The new system goes live on Monday, August 23, 2010.
Yes! Your new Dolphin Email address ends in @myci.csuci.edu.
For example, if your old Dolphin Email address was pat.smith123@dolphin.csuci.edu, your new Dolphin Email address will be pat.smith123@myci.csuci.edu
Mail sent to your old @dolphin.csuci.edu email address will automatically be routed to your new Dolphin Email inbox.
Your can access Dolphin Email by logging to myCI using your Dolphin Name and Password.
You don't need to do anything to get a Dolphin Email account. Your Dolphin Email account is created for your automatically when you become a student. Please refer to the "How do I get my Dolphin Name" section on the A&IT Account ID & Password FAQ page.
Students and alumni are not permitted to select an arbitrary Dolphin Email address (such as ilovecsuci@myci.csuci.edu.) All Dolphin Email addresses are created based on the Dolphin Name of a student or alumnus/alumna, and the Dolphin Name is created based on the legal and preferred name of an individual as stored in CI Records. Students and alumni may only change their Dolphin Name if they update their legal and/or preferred names using the Name Change Process as administered by Records and Registration.
Only email service is officially supported by the University at this time.
Other CSU campuses are already using Gmail and the Google Apps for Education suite, including Chico, East Bay, Fresno, Northridge. Google Apps is being used by thousands of schools, including more than 30 higher ed institutions.
Gmail, as part of Google Apps for Education, provides greater storage capacity, integration points with key campus systems, a secure and stable infrastructure, and a user interface that is familiar to many existing students. Learn More about Google Apps for Education.
The goals of implementing Dolphin Email powered by Google are:
Currently, Google only allows access to specific Google Apps for Education services that are enabled within the University's domain. To access other Google services, you will need to create a separate personal Google account. However, Google is working to bring more applications to the education environment so as they become available, we will announce them to you.
Currently enrolled students and University alumni are eligible to participate in the Dolphin Email powered by Google service. Please refer to the "How do I get my Student Dolphin User Name" section on the A&IT Account ID & Password FAQ page.
At this time, University faculty and staff are not eligible for this service.
You can use either the myCI Change Password service or the myCI Reset Password service to change your Dolphin Password.
You can access your old Dolphin Email until Friday, October 15, 2010, as follows:
If you require assistance, please contact the A&IT Help Desk by phone at 805-437-8552 or email helpdesk@csuci.edu.
Your mail from the old Dolphin Email system will not be migrated to the new Dolphin Email powered by Google system. You may access your old Dolphin Email for a limited time by going to http://mail.dolphin.csuci.edu and logging in with your Dolphin Name and Dolphin Password.
If you would like to move your mail messages to your new Dolphin Email inbox, please use the Google Mail Fetcher tool.
Your folders from the old Dolphin Email system will not be migrated to the new Dolphin Email powered by Google system. You may access your old Dolphin Email folders for a limited time by going to http://mail.dolphin.csuci.edu and logging in with your Dolphin Name and Dolphin Password.
If you would like to move your mail messages to your new Dolphin Email inbox, please use the Google Mail Fetcher tool.
Gmail groups all replies with their original message, creating a single conversation or thread. In other email systems, responses appear as separate messages in your inbox. This grouping, called Conversation View, could make it appear that some of your messages did not get migrated. To see all messages in a conversation, just click Expand all. Please visit the Google Support page on Conversation View for more information.
All your messages that were contained in folders on the old mail server have been migrated to Gmail in a new format called "Labels." Labels functions just like folders, they help you categorize and organize groups of e-mail messages. To view messages that were in folders, simply click on folder name under Labels within Gmail. For more information on Labels see Google Support page on Labels.
Yes! If you want to configure forwarding to another provider, you must do so in your Google account settings. Please see Google Support page for email forwarding for detailed instructions.
No; this will not be migrated to the new system. You must re-create your contacts in the new Dolphin Email.
If you had a Dolphin Email account and Dolphin Email address ending in "@dolphin.csuci.edu" prior to August 23, 2010, then you can still access to your old Dolphin Email by going directly to http://mail.dolphin.csuci.edu/. Your old Dolphin Email account and its contents will stay active until Friday, October 15, 2010.
If you wish to preserve your old email, you can forward the ones you wish to keep to your new "@myci.csuci.edu" Dolphin Email, or you can use the Google Mail Fetcher tool.
Please notify any of your email contacts that they must start using your new Dolphin Email address as of Monday, August 23, 2010.
After Friday, October 15, 2010, you will no longer be able to access your old Dolphin Email account to retrieve old messages, contacts, or other information. Incoming messages sent your old Dolphin Email address will be forwarded to your new Dolphin Email account until Tuesday, November 30, 2010. After November 30, email sent to your old Dolphin Email address will not be processed and will be returned to sender.
If you never had a Dolphin Email account ending in "@dolphin.csuci.edu", then you must access Dolphin Email via myCI.
You will get to keep this account for life (according to Google and CI terms of service) as long as you meet ANY of the following criteria:
Your Dolphin Email will be discontinued two terms after you have discontinued your current student status if you have not taken an official leave of absence.
Students who have taken an official leave of absence will continue to maintain their Dolphin Email address up to four consecutive semesters, but no more than six total semesters of leave from the University. Please refer to the Policy on Academic Leave for more information.
Alumni of the University may continue to use their Dolphin Email account until further notice.
Unfortunately, Dolphin Email is not available to faculty & staff at this time. However, the University is researching the viability of using Google Apps for Education for employees in the future.

It is recommended to set up Dolphin Email to forward messages to your personal email account. Read instructions on how to configure forwarding on the Google Support site.
Your new Dolphin Email account will be protected from spam by Google’s anti-spam software. Read more about how Google handles spam.

Your Dolphin Email powered by Google account is subject to the University's Responsible Use Policy. Your Dolphin Email account will be subject to Google's e-mail quota policy, which is currently more than 7+ gigabytes and constantly growing. Google does not place limits on how long users can keep e-mail. Your Dolphin Email powered by Google account is also subject to Google's terms of service and privacy policies. Please read our Terms of Service.
No. This e-mail address is your official email address through which the university sends official written communications. Students are expected to check their email on a frequent and consistent basis to stay current with university-related communications, and may forward their email from their Dolphin Email e-mail account to another e-mail address at their own risk. The university is not responsible for the handling of email by 3rd parties or external providers. Having email forwarded does not change the individual's responsibility for reading and responding to official communications sent to their Dolphin Email account. Please review the Policy on Communication with Students.
Google is actively working on improving Section 508 compliance. Dolphin Email users have the following options to access their e-mail:
Google is contractually and legally responsible to protect information. Google will not share Dolphin Email contents or personal information to outside parties. Read Google's Terms of Service for Google Apps for Education.
A web-based opt-out student directory is currently in development. The directory will be available in myCI and is expected to launch November 2010.
Students must complete the Name Change process to update their Dolphin Email address. Please contact Records and Registration for more information about the name change process.
Once the process is completed by Enrollment Services, an email alias will be automatically created for your new name. Your old email address will still exist, so that mail sent to both email addresses will be routed to the same account.
